US Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, considered a rising star of the left, has called on the Albanian government to reduce tensions and stop what she describes as violent repression against protesters.
In a reaction published on the social network X, Ocasio-Cortez said that over the past week she has received messages from members of the Albanian community in the United States, who have expressed concern for the safety of their family members in Albania.
"I am calling on the Albanian government to reduce tensions and stop the violent repression of protesters, as well as to respect the freedom of expression of Albanians," the US congresswoman wrote.
Her reaction comes at a time when youth protests continue in Albania, while the situation has been accompanied by tensions and clashes with the police.
US Congressman Ritchie Torres has also reacted through a post on the social network X regarding the violence against protesters in Albania, calling for a halt to police actions and a reduction in tensions.
Torres expressed his deep concern about the outbreak of violence against protesters, while describing the actions of the Albanian police as unacceptable.
"Albanians have the right to protest peacefully, the police must respect the right of protesters to protest and maintain the rule of law," the US congressman wrote.
He also stressed the need to de-escalate the situation and stop the violence, urging that developments in Albania not escalate further.
Ritchie Torres represents New York's 15th district in the United States House of Representatives, which includes part of the Bronx.
