Liverpool started 2023 with a loss after being beaten 3-1 by Brentford at the Gtech Community Stadium.

Despite Bentford's side missing top scorer Ivan Toney through injury, this did not affect their game plan as Thomas Frank's side managed to take all three points.

After just 19 minutes, the Reds were shocked as Ibrahima Konate scored an own goal to give the home side the lead before Darwin Nunez missed a golden opportunity in the opening minutes of the match.

While, two minutes later, Brentford managed to score the second regular, now through Yoane Wissa.

In the second 45 minutes, Liverpool were thought to be on their way back when Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain made it 2-1 with an assist from Trent Alexander-Arnold in the 50th minute. Brentford also scored the third, through Bryan Mbeumo in the 84th minute, after a brilliant assist from Norgaard.

This is the first time Bentford have beaten Liverpool since 1938.

28 points after the first 17 weeks for the English runners-up are too few in the battle for one of the top four places with Manchester United holding fourth position with 32 points and a game in hand.
