Pele, who is Brazil's all-time leading scorer with 77 goals in 92 games, became a football icon after winning the first World Cup in 1958 as a 17-year-old.
Pele, who was born into a poor family in Sao Paulo, won the World Cup with Brazil in 1962 and 1970.
Injury limited his contribution to Brazil's 1962 World Cup triumph in Chile, but eight years later he was man of the tournament after assembling one of the greatest squads of all time to lift the trophy in Mexico thanks to a 4-0 victory over Italy in the final, where he scored the first goal. This goal makes him one of only five players to score in two World Cup finals and thanks to his feat in 1958, he remains the youngest player to score in a World Cup.
His spectacular results made him a Santos legend at club level. Pele holds the home club's all-time record and helped them win two Copa Libertadores titles and six Brazilian league crowns over 18 years.
Pele, who scored 1,281 goals in 1,363 games for club and country during his career, ended his playing days with the New York Cosmos and retired from football in 1977.
After retirement, he was a football ambassador. In 2013, he received the FIFA Ballon d'Or in recognition of his career and achievements, and in 2020 he was named in the Ballon d'Or Dream Team, the 11 greatest of all time.
Pele was in the hospital since November 29. He underwent surgery to remove a tumor from his colon in September 2021 and has been hospitalized several times since then.
