Edson Arantes do Nascimento, known to the world as Pelé, died last Thursday at the age of 82, due to colon cancer. The former footballer is regarded as one of the best, if not the best, of all time and Santos, the club of his love, had thought of paying a special tribute by retiring the number 10 shirt.
In NBA style, where teams draw the number of standout players, Santos was considering making the same decision after Pelé's death. As the president of Santos, Andrés Rueda, stated, at first it was thought to withdraw the number 10, but in the end this will not happen.
Initially, Santos would not use the '10' during the month of January, while the request for the permanent withdrawal of the number was then discussed. However, a note from Pele from 2017 was revealed in the last few hours, in which he said he would not like the idea of retiring the number at all. In his honor, such a thing will not happen.
