Greece has opposed the conclusion of the Agreement in the field of Defense and Security between the European Union and Albania.

Greek media Kathimerini writes that a few days ago a technical meeting was held in Brussels, the main purpose of which was to conclude a series of defense and security agreements with countries inside and outside Europe, namely Canada, Japan, Ghana, Moldova, Norway and South Korea.

According to Kathimerini, Greece opposed in this meeting the conclusion of agreements with Albania, insisting that being a country that wants to join the EU, it must respect the rule of law as a basic element.

"In this background, the Greek side proposed North Macedonia as the most suitable country to conclude a defense and security agreement with the EU, as it has shown a better performance in the field of rule of law, but also standardization of armed forces with the western ones. Through its participation in NATO, Macedonia has moved at an extremely fast pace", writes the Greek media.

The Greek proposal was not accepted, but neither was the issue of Albania advanced, despite the very strong support of the Italians, who are also Tirana's closest partner in the EU, which is a regular source of clashes between Rome and Athens, writes Kathimerini.

The reason for the opposition from the Greek side is the Beleri case.

"After the considerable failure of the Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama to resolve the case, the Greek authorities are waiting to see until January 25, when the trial of the elected mayor of Himara, Beleri, is expected to resume. However, behind the scenes, the contacts continue, always under the condition that Beleri is sworn in," writes Kathimerini.

It is worth noting that the EU's partnership agreements with third countries are not a new development, but are part of the broader framework of the Strategic Compass for 2030, which is also a time horizon that will judge the ability of Europe to play or not a role in geopolitical developments.
