On April 30 of this year, many of us were surprised to see the name of epidemiologist Ilir Alimehmeti on the list of candidates for members of the National Council of the Democratic Party and then his election as a member of this Council.
This is due to the fact that until that day, Alimehmeti was one of the doctors who was recognized by the public during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic and had never mixed with politics or made a political status on social networks.
But, since being elected as a member, he has not been absent from any of the meetings of the National Council of the DP, we have seen him many times during Berisha's discussion tables and recently also with television appearances and statuses on social networks where he talks about the Party Democratic and misgovernance. This is completely within his right.
In recent days, his name is being discussed as a possible candidate of the Democratic Party for the Municipality of Tirana for the elections held next year, and today he was one of the main voices in the teachers' protest.
But was it a coincidence that the doctor Ilir Alimehmeti entered politics and aligned himself with Sali Berisha?
No, as Vox News.al has learned that doctor Alimehmeti comes from a family closely connected to politics and in particular to Berisha's Democratic Party. He is the son of a former deputy of the Democratic Party.
Jera Kruja, Ilir Alimehmeti's mother, was a deputy in the 3rd Legislature of the Albanian Parliament during 1996-1997 from the ranks of the DP and also ran for deputy in the central elections of June 2009, ranking 28th on the list of the Democratic Party for the District of Tirana, reports Vox News.al.
Also, Jera Kruja has held positions as head of the University Service of Neurology at QSUT as well as rector of the University of Medicine.
Doctor Alimehmeti is the first name that is rumored as a candidate of the Democratic Party for the Municipality of Tirana and it seems that he is also benefiting from his parents' friendship with the former Prime Minister Sali Berisha and it seems that he will follow in his mother's footsteps in politics.
But, with a candidate like Alimehmeti, Erion Veliaj seems to have a very easy race to win the Municipality of Tirana for the third time. This is due to the fact that, first of all, the PD is divided into two or three parts, and secondly, a candidate like Alimehmeti has no political stature.
Likewise, if he will be a candidate for the Municipality of Tirana, the primaries will turn out to be fictitious and it seems that there will be disappointment even within the ranks of Berisha's democrats when the other candidates in the primaries understand the "game".
