A serious incident has occurred in Kosovo, where a 49-year-old woman lost her life.
The victim is Arlinda Sylaj Zekaj , who was killed with an axe by her brother-in-law Albert Sylaj , in Vitomirica, Peja. Meanwhile, her husband Jeton Sylaj was detained for 48 hours after questioning.
Arlinda's story involves domestic violence and a long battle by the 49-year-old to reunite with her son.
Arlinda and her husband had lived in the United States for about ten years. The family was originally from Deçan, and later lived in Vitomirica, Peja.
"Sinjali" reports that after returning to Kosovo, family relations allegedly deteriorated to the point that Arlinda faced constant violence. Her husband kicked her out of the house, burned her clothes, and separated from her.
After the separation, Arlinda also faced obstacles in taking the child with her.
During a period when the husband had traveled to America, the son had been left under the care of a third person, while the mother had sought the intervention of institutions to resolve the issue.
The requests for intervention were also related to the claim that the child had been left without the care of a parent who had left the country. For Arlinda, not being allowed to have her son with her was not simply a family dispute. According to the claims, she experienced this situation as a severe form of psychological violence.
This story also mentions the existence of a protective order, related to the violence reported by the husband. However, its content, duration and manner of implementation remain to be verified, as well as the decisions that have been made regarding the care of the child. Another worrying element is related to the allegations of delays in the processing of institutional requests.
According to media in Kosovo, one order was waited for about 24 days, while another request was allegedly rejected. It has not yet been clarified which specific decision this is, which court or institution handled the request, and on what grounds the decision was made.
But what is known is that Arlinda, just three days before the murder, had urgently requested the intervention of the Basic Prosecution Office in Peja.
In the letter received on October 22, 2026, addressed to the Chief Prosecutor, the victim requested measures be taken against officials who, according to her, had failed to fulfill their duties, as well as the immediate execution of a court order.
In the document, she wrote that the danger to her life continued, while also demanding investigations into the officials involved, starting with the Center for Social Work.
"This is my latest addition," Arlinda wrote.
In the same letter, she warned that the day might come when institutions would be held accountable only after her life was taken. Three days later, she was killed. On the evening of October 25, Arlinda was questioned by the police in Peja regarding a domestic violence case and at around 8:58 p.m., she was returned home by police patrol.
About ten minutes after the police officers left, she was found lifeless in the bedroom.
