" I hope that the day does not come when you and the responsible institutions are forced to give an account only after my life has been taken ," Arlinda Sylaj Zekaj warned the Basic Prosecution Office in Peja in a letter submitted on October 22.
Three days later, on October 25, she was killed in Vitomirica, Peja.
In the handwritten letter, Zekaj requested urgent intervention and an investigation of officials who, according to her, had not fulfilled their duties.
She raised concerns about her safety, the non-implementation of a court decision, and the way institutions were shifting responsibility from one to another.
The prosecution confirmed that it had received the complaint and forwarded it for urgent treatment to the relevant institutions.
The Chief Prosecutor also ordered that claims of possible criminal liability be reviewed by a competent prosecutor.
A police report dated October 22, also obtained by Sinjali, documents that that evening the Police had accompanied Zekaj to her apartment in Vitomirica. Her ex-husband had not opened the door for her. After consulting with the Prosecutor's Office and assessing that it was not safe to stay there, she was recommended to go to her brothers. Zekaj left that evening towards their home in Radac.
Three days later, Zekaj again reported domestic violence to the Police. According to the Police, her ex-husband was detained for 48 hours, while she requested to return to her apartment.
The patrol escorted her to Vitomirica; about ten minutes after the police left, they received a report of the murder. She was found lifeless in her bedroom. Her brother-in-law, Albert Sylaj, is suspected of the murder, who, according to published reports, is on the run.
The prosecution announced that the court decision for equal use of the house was executed by the custody prosecutor, in cooperation with the Police.
She said that Zekaj's complaint had been forwarded for urgent treatment to the Police, the Basic Court, the Directorate for Social Welfare and the Center for Social Work.
These actions are part of the Prosecutor's Office's official response; Zekaj's allegations of institutional oversight must be investigated and verified.
