Spanish police have arrested five people who, claiming to be Hollywood star Brad Pitt in fake profiles created on the Internet, deceived two women and took 325 thousand euros.

"Those arrested contacted women from a fan page of the Oscar-winning actor and led them to believe they had an emotional relationship with him," the Spanish Civil Guard said in a statement.

Posing as Pitt, the gang members then allegedly encouraged the women to invest in various non-existent projects.

One woman, from the southern region of Andalusia, received 175,000 euros, while the other, from the northern region of the Basque Country, lost 150,000 euros.

"Cybercriminals, in order to catch the victims, had studied their social networks and analyzed their psychological profile, revealing that they are two vulnerable people without affection and in a state of depression," the police underlined.

They also used messaging platforms and e-mails to contact the two women who went so far as to believe they were chatting on WhatsApp with Pitt himself, while scammers on the other end of the computer promised them romance and a future together.

The five fraudsters were arrested by the police in the southern region of Andalusia, and among them is the "brain" of the criminal network.

Police raided five homes, seizing several mobile phones, bank cards, two computers and a diary "which contained phrases used by fraudsters to deceive their victims". They also managed to recover 85 thousand euros.
