The busiest airport in the world will be "retired", Dubai starts work on a terminal with a larger capacity

A new passenger record has been reached in the first half of the year at the world's busiest airport, which, although it wants to remain a hub for international air traffic, is unable to serve the number of passengers expected to travel.

Dubai International Airport in the United Arab Emirates welcomed 44.9 million visitors in the period between January and June, an increase of 8% from the 41.6 million passengers who had passed through in the corresponding period of 2023. “The record performance of the first half of the year supports our strategic value as a global aviation hub", said the airport's chief executive.

According to him, the airport is on track to reach 91.8 million annual visitors in 2024. It is worth noting that the airport's best year was 2018, when the number of passengers reached 89.1 million. Last year, the figure reached 86.9 million.

However, Dubai International Airport has a capacity of up to 120 million passengers per year and its location near the city does not allow for further expansion in the number of travelers expected to pass through the UAE in the coming years. Thus, also spurred by the revival of tourist traffic worldwide, the country has initiated plans to expand the second largest airport in the region, Al Maktoum International Airport, which since 2010 serves a relatively small share of flights.

A few months ago it was announced that work had begun on a new terminal, with the vision of the airport becoming the largest in the world and of course replacing Dubai International Airport.

According to the authorities, when the related works are completed at a cost of nearly 35 billion dollars, Al Maktoum will be able to carry up to 260 million passengers a year. The first phase of the project is expected to be completed within 10 years, with a capacity expected to reach 150 million passengers within 12 months.
