Xi Jinping wins third term as president of China

Chinese leader Xi Jinping was given a third five-year term as China's president on Friday.

The approval of Xi's appointment at the National People's Congress (NPC) ceremony was expected and premeditated, as the leader has sidelined potential political rivals and filled the top ranks of the country's ruling Communist Party with supporters since taking power in 2012.

The vote for Xi at the National People's Congress was unanimous, with 2,952 in favor and none against. The members of this Congress are appointed by the ruling party.

Xi, 69, had appointed himself to a third five-year term as party general secretary in October, breaking with a tradition in which Chinese leaders hand over power once a decade.

A two-term limit on China's presidency was scrapped from the Chinese constitution earlier, prompting suggestions he could stay in power for life.
