The EU Council approves visa liberalization for Kosovo

The Council of Ministers of the European Union unanimously approved the liberalization of visas for Kosovo this Thursday.

The new rules will allow citizens of Kosovo to travel to the EU without a visa for a period of stay of 90 days in any 180-day period.

As the Council of Europe's official website explains, the visa exemption will apply from the date the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) comes into operation or from 1 January 2024, whichever comes first.

The new rules must now be approved by the European Parliament before being signed and published in the EU's official journal.

" Kosovo has made great efforts to improve security and migration management and to harmonize its visa policy with that of the EU. We hope that our cooperation in these areas will continue to be fruitful" , said the Swedish Minister for Migration, Maria Malmer Stenergard.

" Kosovo has made significant progress in all blocks of the roadmap for visa liberalization. Based on this assessment, the Commission proposed the removal of visas for holders of passports issued by Kosovo. The exemption from the visa requirement will ensure that the entire Western Balkans region is under the same visa regime ," the EC's official website says.
