The preliminary results of the local elections in 14 municipalities in Montenegro indicate a victory for the pro-Russian and pro-Serbian political forces, which also won the 2020 parliamentary elections.

Despite the fact that the coalition gathered around the Democratic Party of Socialists of the current president Milo Djukanovic won the most votes, however, the "Democratic Front", "Democrats" and the newly founded party "Europe Now", in a possible coalition could exercise power in the capital of Mali Black, Podgorica.

According to the data of the Center for Democratic Transition (CDT), although the pro-European party of President Djukanovic won the most mandates in some cities, due to the lack of possible post-election coalitions, local governments will be formed by their political opponents. .

Apart from Podgorica, the Democratic Socialist Party with its allies lost Danilovgrad, Kolasin, Zhablak, Plevle, while it managed to retain power in Bijelo Pole and Tivar. Meanwhile, the pro-Serbian Democratic Front managed to maintain absolute power in the coastal city of Budva.

These elections were considered very important as the race took place between two political groups that have dominated for years in Montenegro. On one side were the pro-Montenegro parties led by the Democratic Party of Socialists and the current president, Milo Djukanovic, who held power in Montenegro for over 30 years, and on the other side were the parties that won the 2020 elections, known as the grouping pro-Serbian and pro-Russian.

The elections are held at the height of the political crisis in the country, when the outgoing government of Prime Minister Dritan Abazović lost confidence and the parliamentary majority failed to form a new government. So these elections are also a test for the next parliamentary elections in Montenegro.

Local elections were held in 14 municipalities in Montenegro and according to observers who monitored the electoral process, it was quite peaceful and democratic./VOA
