President Joe Biden joked that he has a hard time accepting that he is approaching 80, but added that he is both physically and mentally fit to serve a possible second term in the White House.

Mr. Biden, who turns 80 on Nov. 20, said it's a perfectly legitimate concern for voters to question whether someone his age can handle the high-stress job of president. Mr. Biden made the comment during an MSNBC television interview that aired Sunday, during which he was asked about his age.

He said people should judge for themselves whether he is up to the task. The comments come as polls show a large portion of voters would not want to see a rematch between him and Republican Donald Trump, whom Mr. Biden beat in 2020.

If he wins, Mr. Biden would be 82 years old on inauguration day in January 2025, while Mr. Trump would be 78 years old.

A recent poll by the Associated Press and the Public Affairs Research Center NORC shows that only 3 in 10 Americans want Mr. Biden or Mr. Trump to run for president in two years. Only 5 in 10 Democrats want Mr. Biden to run for a second term, while 6 in 10 Republicans hope to see Mr. Trump run for president again.

"I think the best way to judge is to see what I do. Have I slowed down or am I still going?'' Mr. Biden said in a taped interview Friday during a visit to the Delaware State University campus in support of the executive order to forgive student loan debt.

President Biden has not yet officially announced whether he will run for a second term, but has repeatedly said that his intention is to run for re-election.

During the 2020 campaign, Mr. Biden was often presented as a "transition candidate" who would build a bridge for talented young Democrats.

Mr. Biden's age and health, as well as Mr. Trump's, were addressed during the presidential race, the fate of which was decided by a younger and more diverse electorate.

In the MSNBC interview, Mr. Biden said voters should look at his passion for the job while weighing the issue of his age as a factor in whether or not to vote for him.

Mr. Biden underwent a series of blood tests and physical examinations last year, shortly before his birthday.

Dr. Kevin O'Connor, President Biden's physician, wrote in a six-page document released by the White House that Mr. Biden was healthy, energetic and able to successfully carry out the presidency.
