Rishi Sunak officially in the race for the post of Prime Minister of Britain

Former chancellor Rishi Sunak has announced his entry into the race to replace Liz Truss as UK prime minister, just six weeks after she defeated him in the race.

Over 100 MPs have declared their support for Sunak.

Media in Britain reported that Sunak and Boris Johnson discussed behind closed doors late into the night about the possibility of laying the foundations for a united Conservative government.

Boris Johnson is also expected to be in the race, who wants to return to the post of prime minister. Sir James Duddridge, a friend of Johnson, said the former prime minister had the support of the 100 MPs needed to reserve his seat in the vote.

Labor leader Sir Keir Starmer said a "ridiculous and chaotic circus" was taking place at the top of the Conservative Party, adding: "My focus is on the millions of people who are struggling to pay their bills, now they have had extra anxiety around them. I know what it's like to not be able to pay your bills, that happened to me and my family when I was growing up."
