The Parliament of Montenegro has voted in favor of the dismissal of two pro-Western ministers of the incumbent Government of Dritan Abazovic.

41 pro-Serbian MPs, in the 81-seat Parliament, voted in the late hours of October 21 for the dismissal of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ranko Krivokapic, and the Minister of Defense, Rashko Konjevic.

Abazovic accused the two members of the pro-Western party, the Social Democratic Party, of working against the interests of the Government.

The pro-Serbian and pro-Russian camps in Montenegro are trying to oust the pro-Western president, Milo Djukanovic, and put him on trial over corruption allegations.

Djukanovic led Montenegro to independence from Serbia in 2006 and joined the country in NATO in 2017.

Abazovic's government is in office after Parliament voted a motion of no confidence in the executive in August this year.

Abazovic, who leads the URA Movement, had initially been pro-Western, but began to pursue a more pro-Serbian policy when he came to power through a reshuffle of the governing coalition in April.

In August, Abazovic signed an agreement with the Serbian Orthodox Church that does not recognize Montenegro's identity as a separate state. He argued that the agreement with the Church would help overcome deep internal divisions.

The signing of the agreement was criticized by pro-European political forces in Montenegro. New elections have not yet been called because there is no majority in Parliament.

Meanwhile, local elections will be held in 14 municipalities on October 23, including in the capital of Montenegro, Podgorica.

A consensus on new elections, which could potentially be held in January, is expected to be reached after the local elections.

A European Commission report, published earlier this month, said lawmakers in Montenegro have failed to show commitment to implementing reforms that would bring the country closer to the European Union, despite Montenegro's state status. candidate./REL
