A giant hippo swallowed a two-year-old boy before thankfully pulling him out alive.

The strange scene took place in Uganda and the boy, named Iga Paul, only came out after angry and shocked locals stoned the starving hippo.

Amazingly, the incident took place in April this year, but was not actually reported to the police until Monday (December 12), when footage of it went viral. The attack happened on the shores of Lake Edwards and the animal attacked the 2-year-old who was playing outside his house.

Ugandan police said: “This is the first such incident where a hippo escaped from Lake Edward and attacked a small child. He grabbed the boy by the head and swallowed half of his body. It took the courage of a bystander to throw stones at the hippo and scare it, causing it to release the victim from its mouth.”

The boy was taken to a nearby clinic, before being transferred to a hospital for further treatment. It is not clear what injuries he suffered, but he was given a rabies vaccine - which hippos are known to carry.

Reports suggest the hippo was just playing with the boy, rather than eating him, as they are vegetarians but can attack humans if they feel threatened.

In Africa, there are about 500 hippo deaths per year. According to National Geographic, they are the deadliest animal in the world and kill almost twice as many people as lions.
