The United States has welcomed the decision of the Special Court against the former commander of the Kosovo Liberation Army, Salih Mustafa, who was sentenced to 26 years in prison for war crimes. According to the indictment, Salih Mustafa, known as 'commander Cali', was the commander of the BIA guerrilla unit, the unit within the Llap Operational Area of the Kosovo Liberation Army.

The spokesperson of the US Department of State, Ned Price, has said that the decision taken by the Special Court, on December 16, is a step that helps Kosovo to guarantee the rule of law and to bring justice to the victims.

"As the court has said, this decision is not a judgment against the KLA or Kosovo, but it is only related to the criminal responsibility of the defendant. We also applaud the bravery of the individual victims and witnesses who have come forward, and condemn the threats and intimidation against them. Without these brave individuals, justice would not be possible," Price said in a press release. The decision against Mustafa constitutes the first decision of the Special Court regarding the investigations for war crimes in Kosovo.

According to the Law on Specialized Chambers (the official name of the Special Court), the serving of the prison sentence is done in one of the states that the President of the Specialized Chambers designates from among those states that have shown willingness to accept the convicted persons.

The Special Court investigates the alleged crimes of members of the Kosovo Liberation Army against ethnic minorities and political rivals in the period January 1998 - December 2000. Even the acting Specialized Prosecutor in the Special Court, Alex Whiting, has welcomed the decision against Mustafa.

The former commander of the Kosovo Liberation Army, Salih Mustafa, was sentenced yesterday by the Special Court to 26 years in prison for unlawful killing, arbitrary detention and torture. All the victims are Kosovo Albanians. The prosecution had said that the "only fault" of some victims was that they were members of the Democratic League, labeled as collaborators and spies working for the enemy, because they did not support the KLA enough. At the same time, this will be the first decision of this institution regarding the investigations for war crimes in Kosovo.

Ajo ka thënë se pika e trajtimit mizor është mbuluar nga pika e torturës dhe si e tillë nuk është shqyrtuar më tej.
