The lobbying scandal, deputy President: I asked my father to take the money from

The vice president of the European Parliament, Eva Kaili, testified today before the Greek authorities regarding the serious accusation against her and three other officials for lobbying Qatar.

Kaili appeared before the court today where he testified that he had contacted his father shortly before the money was confiscated and asked him to take the money and hand it over to the rightful owner.

"After Pançeri's presentation, I panicked. I contacted my father, who was in Brussels with his wife, and asked him to take the money that was in my house to a safe place and hand it over to the rightful owner. He came, took the suitcase with the money and returned to the hotel where he was staying. However, apparently, he was already being watched by the police. They raided his room and confiscated his money", says Eva Kaili in her statement.

The charges are allegedly linked to a bribery campaign sponsored by Qatar, which is currently hosting the World Cup. The British broadcaster BBC has reported that prosecutors suspect that "this Gulf state has influenced the political and economic decisions of the European Parliament for many months".

Since Friday, the IT resources of 10 employees of the parliament have been "frozen" to prevent the disappearance of data necessary for the investigation. The four suspects arrested by the Belgian police have been charged with "participation in a criminal organization, money laundering and corruption".

Prosecutors in Greece have frozen all of Ms Kaili's assets. Six people were arrested on Friday as part of the investigation into allegations that Qatar bribed EU officials to gain influence. Two were released later, leaving only 4 officials of the European Parliament in handcuffs.

Among the four arrested persons, there is also the ex-Italian husband of the Greek MEP Eva Kaili, ex-parliamentary assistant of Mr. Panzeri. It was the Belgian newspaper 'Le Soir' that first reported the Qatar scandal where attempts were made to corrupt the Italian socialist MP who was a member of the EP since 2004=2009. The other two arrested are Luca Visentini, newly elected General Secretary of the International Trade Union Confederation, former MP Pier-Antonio Panzeri.

The president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, also reacted to the scandal, saying that the accusations were "very serious" and calling for the creation of a new ethics body to oversee the bloc.
