The NHS (Britain's National Health System) has been alerted to the worst flu outbreak in years after hospital admissions rose by 40% in a week.
For the first time since the beginning of the pandemic, the number of people who have been hospitalized with the flu has exceeded those with the coronavirus.
According to NHS figures the hospitalization rate for flu was 6.8 per 100,000 people in the week to December 11, doubling from 3.9 per 100,000 the previous week while for the same week it was 6.6 per 100,000 for coronavirus.
Hospitals are on full alert as flu hospitalizations have risen more than eight times more than expected at this time of year.
According to estimates, this could be the biggest outbreak since 2017/18, when 30,000 people died.
