After 21 years of loyal service, Angelina Jolie is stepping down from her role as Special Envoy of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).

The Hollywood actress also wants to work on broader humanitarian issues, reads a statement released today.

"After 20 years of working within the United Nations system, I feel the time has come for me to work differently, engaging directly with refugee and local organizations," added the actress.

"Angelina Jolie has long been an important humanitarian partner of UNHCR. We are grateful to her for her decades of service, her commitment and the difference she has made for refugees and forcibly displaced people,” said UNHCR head Filippo Grandi.

Jolie first worked with the UN refugee agency in 2001 and was appointed its special envoy in 2012.
