Putin: Russia will fight for at least five years in Ukraine
Putin and Xi Jinping

Russian President Vladimir Putin told his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping that Russia will fight for at least five years in Ukraine, writes the Japanese weekly "Nikkei Asia", citing several sources familiar with the diplomatic maneuvers between the two countries.

According to the weekly, during Xi's visit to Russia, Putin wanted to sum up a situation that was not favorable for Moscow at the time by assuring the Chinese leader that Russia would eventually win the war.

Nikkei Asia then comments that, in light of Putin's words to Xi, the Russian leader's openness to a ceasefire, reported by the New York Times last week, could mean that Putin simply wants to create the illusion of movement. toward a truce or even peace ahead of Russian presidential elections in March, believing that such an atmosphere would favor him at the polls.
