The United States will provide up to $250 million in aid to Ukraine.
The US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, said that this will be the last military aid package for Ukraine for this year, while the deadlock continues in Congress that has blocked the approval of an aid package proposed by President Joe Biden.
The latest aid includes an array of air defense munitions and high-mobility artillery missile systems, artillery ammunition and anti-armor systems, over 15 million rounds of ammunition, medical and other equipment.
The aid was provided through a presidential authority that allows aid to be quickly made available through withdrawal from Pentagon stockpiles.
In a statement, Marine Lt. Col. Garron Garn said the Pentagon has no other funds to replace weapons taken from Defense Department stockpiles. Also, the Ukraine Security Initiative, which deals with long-term funding, has run out of funds.
As a result, Mr. Garn said Wednesday that "without additional funding, there will be a shortfall in the United States' military reserves, affecting American military readiness."
President Joe Biden is asking Congress to approve a $110 billion aid package for Ukraine, Israel and other national security needs. This package includes $61.4 billion for Ukraine, half of which is to replenish Pentagon reserves.
The package also includes about $14 billion for Israel and its fight against Hamas, while $14 billion is for United States border security. Other funds will go to security needs in the Asia-Pacific.
This bill is being conditioned by Republicans, who are seeking to approve funding to strengthen security along the US-Mexico border.
The White House has warned that without the approval of additional funds, US aid to Kiev will run out by the end of the year. The United States has approved several aid packages for Ukraine in its fight to recapture territories seized by Russian forces since the Kremlin's aggression began in February 2022.
Congress has approved more than $110 billion in aid for Ukraine since the Russian attack, but has not approved any funds since Republicans took control of the House of Representatives in January 2023.
The latest US aid comes as the war in Ukraine enters its 22nd month. Meanwhile, Russia has attacked with almost 50 Shahed drones on various targets in Ukraine and bombed a train station in the southern city of Kherson, where more than 100 civilians were waiting for a train bound for Kiev. Days earlier, Ukrainian warplanes damaged a Russian warship in the Black Sea near Crimea, as soldiers from both sides are trying to advance along the front lines. / VOA
