US President Joe Biden has chosen Admiral Lisa Franchetti to be the top leader of the US Navy. If confirmed, she will be the first woman in US military history to hold the post.
Franchetti currently serves as Deputy Chief of Naval Operations. She has been a part of the US military since 1985 and has served as the commander of the US Naval Forces in Korea, as well as in several different departments of the naval forces.
"Admiral Lisa Franchetti has 38 years of experience and dedicated service to the country," Biden said when he announced his appointment on Friday. "Throughout his career, he has shown experience both in the field of policy-making and in the operational field. She is the second woman to achieve the rank of 4-star admiral in the United States Navy, and when confirmed, she will once again make history as the first woman to lead naval operations."
However, as CNN reports, Franchetti will have to wait to receive confirmation in office, due to the abstention of Republican Senator Tommy Tuberville, who opposes some policies adopted by the Biden administration. "I urge the Senate to approve all nominations as soon as possible," Biden said Friday.
