A weekend of hell awaits Greece, as meteorologists warn of temperatures up to 45 degrees Celsius.
Citizens have been advised to stay at home and tourist attractions such as the Acropolis will remain closed during peak hours. Experts say this could turn into the hottest weekend in 50 years, with Athens set to scorch with temperatures above 40 degrees for 6 to 7 days from the end of July.
"Currently I live in Denmark, and we came to a warm place to visit the beaches. But the heat was unbearable. It's terrible," said Michele Albano.
So the firefighters continue the battle with dozens of fires. Civil defense and emergency services officials are warning of an extremely high risk of new outbreaks around the country. Western Attica, west of Athens, is among the hardest hit areas, along with Laconia in the southern Peloponnese and the island of Rhodes. Many citizens have lost their homes, and others refuse calls from the authorities to evacuate in an attempt to save them.
"No, I'm not leaving here. So I told them. I will stay in my house until it burns", said one resident.
Greece's EU partners have provided assistance, including firefighting planes from France and Italy and more than 200 firefighters from Slovakia, Romania and Bulgaria. Neighboring Turkey is also helping with planes. Greece, along with Italy and Spain, are among the European countries experiencing a prolonged extreme heat wave.
