American media warning: Putin wants to start a war in the Balkans

"Putin wants a war in the Balkans". This is the title of an opinion published in the prestigious American newspaper, the Wall Street Journal , in which the close relations between Russia and Serbia and the influence of this alliance in fueling conflicts in the region are detailed.

The authors, Ivana Stradner and Mark Montgomery, researchers at the Foundation for the Defense of Democracies, estimate that at a time when all eyes are on Ukraine, another conflict is arising in Europe.

Russia's eyes are directed towards Kosovo, while Serbia is directing developments on the ground, at a time of extremely high tensions. The researchers point to Serbia's threatening moves to put the army on alert after last May's tensions and US fears that it was preparing to launch an invasion of Kosovo after the September armed attack.

"Concerns about a new crisis prompted Washington to release secret intelligence information about Serbia's military deployment and the attack on the Kosovo police. A few days later, Serbia withdrew from the border, but it is clear that Belgrade and Moscow are preparing another campaign of violence and provocation for 2024. Russia is conducting influence operations with pro-war messages in Serbia and sending weapons. China is also sending weapons.”

Further in the opinion of the Wall Street Journal, it is said that Serbia has increased military spending this year and continues to allow the activities of the so-called humanitarian center managed by Russia, near the main NATO base in Kosovo.

This Russian center, according to Western officials, serves as Putin's espionage center in the Balkans. The researchers emphasize that Serbia wants and expects any pretext to act.

Regarding these disturbing developments, they call on the Western powers and NATO to reorient diplomatic and military resources, but also to use the force of sanctions. The opinion concludes with the fact that Russia needs to open a new front in the Balkans, to divert attention from the conflict in Ukraine.
