More than 200 tourists were stranded Monday morning on a mountaintop in Rio de Janeiro after gunfire erupted between police and gang members in a nearby favela.

The visitors had climbed Dois Irmãos Mountain to admire the sunrise, but were forced to stand for about two hours at the top, while gunfire could be heard from the Vidigal favela below. They only left after the police, in coordination with the tour guides, gave the safety signal.

The area is one of the most popular tourist destinations, as it offers panoramic views of the famous Leblon Beach and Ipanema Beach. Every week, thousands of visitors pass through Vidigal to reach the top.

According to Renan Monteiro, a representative of a tourism agency, about 70% of those present were foreign tourists. He stressed that the area is usually considered peaceful, but such incidents directly affect the image and flow of visitors.

Police said members of a drug trafficking gang opened fire on security forces, endangering residents and tourists. However, no injuries were reported, and three people were arrested.

Witnesses described moments of panic. "It was really scary, a police helicopter was flying over us and some people fainted," said a visitor from São Paulo. Another tourist said she was forced to cut short her stay because of the dangerous situation.
