Wolfgang Schäuble, the former German finance minister, has passed away at the age of 81. According to the announcement of the family, the 81-year-old politician died at his home on Tuesday evening.
Schäuble, who was a member of the Bundestag for 50 years, is survived by his 80-year-old wife Ingeborg, four children and four grandchildren.
As noted by the German media, Schäuble marked the history of Germany like no other politician.
Schaeuble spent much of his career dedicated to reunifying his country and later served as former chancellor Angela Merkel's finance minister during the eurozone debt crisis.
Schaeuble had been a member of Merkel's center-right Christian Democratic Party since 1965 and became a member of parliament in 1972, making him one of Germany's longest-serving politicians.
In October 1990 Schäuble was shot by a mentally ill person during a campaign rally and has been in a wheelchair ever since.
