Dozens of villages with a Christian population were attacked by gunmen at midnight on Christmas Day in Nigeria.

At least 160 people were killed in surprise, while around 300 others were injured by the armed attack in the villages of Ndun, Ngyong, Murfet, Makundary, Tamiso, Chiang, Tahore, Gawarba, Dares, Meyenga, Darëat and Butura Kampani.

Media in the West write that it is not a question of an attack with a religious background, but of armed groups that attempt to rob, loot or take people hostage in these villages.

However, some pages of Christian religious institutions report that the massacre happened because of faith, as the perpetrators did not rob anything, but after the murders they set fire to houses and cars in the villages.

At least 221 houses were burnt. Amnesty International accused the Nigerian government of failing to prevent the attack. Similar attacks on Christians in Nigeria have happened before.

A survivor recounted the horror scenes, saying they were attacked around 11pm on December 24. He said that the perpetrators did not even spare the children.

International Christian Concern (ICC) has chronicled attacks against Christian communities by Fulani militias in Nigeria. More than 50,000 Christians have been killed in the Middle Belt region over the past 20 years and millions more have been displaced.
