The nuclear-powered Poseidon drone-equipped 'city killer' submarine has been spotted just 270 miles from the NATO border in a satellite photo.

The infamous Belgorod was seen docked at a port in Severodvinsk - close to the Russian Arctic - in what is seen as Putin's latest shocking warning to the West.

According to defense expert HI Sutton, the submarine "is believed to have returned after a long period when it disappeared" in the Barents Sea, north of Russia's Kola Peninsula.

The powerful submarine K-329 Belgorod can cause a radioactive tsunami and wipe out the coast of a city near which it is launched.

In July it was reported that the Russian Navy took delivery of the longest submarine ever built and last month it was reported to have disappeared from Western radars.

The latest images suggest Putin is going to great lengths to hide the location of his 14,700-tonne war machine, prompting speculation from experts that it could be used as a show of force.

HI Sutton previously told La Reppubblica: "It's a completely new type of weapon that will force Western navies to change their planning and develop new countermeasures."

First announced in 2015, some thought the Poseidon would not materialize – but it was quietly launched for the first time last year amid threats to sink British and US warships in the Black Sea.

It is said to have been in development since before the fall of the Soviet Union.

The revolutionary design – based on the Oscar II class missile submarines – has been extensively modified to specialize in covert missions.

Christopher A Ford, a former assistant secretary of state for international security, told CNN that the submarine's torpedoes were being designed to "flood US coastal cities with radioactive tsunamis."

These photos come a day after Sunday's parade of another 3,000-ton submarine in the streets of St. Petersburg, Russia.

Built in 1957, the K-3 Leninsky Komsomol was the Soviet Union's first nuclear submarine – and is now set to become a museum in the city of Kronstadt, near St Petersburg.

The huge submarine was paraded through the city on Sunday on its way to where it will be assembled and turned into a museum.
