Cancer vaccines can be made by 2030, judging by the words of the co-founders of the German pharmaceutical company BioNTech, Ugur Sahin and Ozlema Tirechi, whose work is known for creating a vaccine against COVID during the pandemic with the American Pfizer.

Spouses Sahin and Tirechi say they have made a breakthrough that has given them optimism for cancer vaccines in the coming years, The Guardian reported.

Speaking to the BBC, Professor Tirechi explained how RNA technology could be redirected to empower the immune system to attack cancer cells, using the same principle that the coronavirus targets.

BioNTech was working on RNA vaccines against cancer before the pandemic started, but then the company shifted its focus to creating vaccines against COVID.

The company already has several cancer vaccines in clinical trials, and Tirechi says success with the Pfizer/Biontech COVID vaccine could now pave the way for scientists to focus on fighting cancer.

The German firm hopes to be able to develop treatments for colon cancer, skin cancer and several other types of cancer, but there are major hurdles to a solution.

Cancer cells that form a tumor can be filled with a wide variety of different proteins, making it difficult to create a vaccine that targets all cancer cells.
