Why should the West overcome fears of Putin's nuclear threats?
Vladimir Putin

The Russian president has only one option left after Ukraine's military successes in supplying Western weapons, experts warn: atomic bombs. This narrative is wrong and dangerous criticizes Joscha Weber.

Fear paralyzes us. Fear weakens us. Fear prevents us from having a clear view of situations. Our greatest fear is that of an atomic war, as Putin threatens again. Because that would mean the end of the world, the apocalypse. The fear for the planet and humanity can even be concretized with numbers: according to current polls, about 58% of Americans fear that Russia is heading for an atomic war, in Germany, about 49% of the respondents are afraid.

A fear that has long reached experts, soldiers and politicians. One example: political scientist and Putin expert Gerhard Mangott of the University of Innsbruck, Austria warned on Deutschlandfunk, German Radio, that in the event of territorial victories in Ukraine and a continued supply of modern weapons from the West, Putin is left with only "nuclear escalation" as option, which would become "more and more real", if Russia goes on the defensive.

Whoever surrenders, loses

What is closer to logic in this situation than to prevent the worst? If necessary, even with concessions to Putin? But this would be the worst operation. If the West gives in to Putin's nuclear blackmail, it would lose completely. Ukraine would have to accept significant losses of territory, Eastern European countries would rightfully lose confidence in EU and US support, and NATO would have to throw its threat strategy into the dustbin without delay.

In short: Putin would win. And he could use this tactic again, concludes American historian Timothy Snyder from Yale University in an analysis: "Surrendering to a nuclear threat does not end the conventional war in Ukraine. It would increase the probability of future atomic wars.”
