German intelligence: Putin declared war on the West

The head of Germany's secret service, Bruno Kahl, has considered Russia's war in Ukraine as a "declaration of war" against the entire western democratic world.

Speaking before a parliamentary committee, Kahl said that the war of the Russian president, Vladimir Putin, did not have the primary goal of the territory of Ukraine.

Putin will continue to use his force - as he has in Chechnya, Georgia, Syria, Crimea and Donbas - to achieve his political goals, he said.

When it came to the conflict in Ukraine, he said that he expects the fighting to continue next year, as neither side is ready to cede territory.

Kahl has also said that the warnings of the service he leads have not been paid much attention.

"Unfortunately, it has become a tradition in public discourse, in recent decades, to constantly ignore and suppress real threats - and to be considered by security authorities as intimidating or pompous."

Such developments, like the war in Ukraine, show why Germany needs security authorities, he said.

Among other global developments, that of an "autocratic China that aims to become a global power" is included, Kahl said.

The board of the German secret service usually meets in secret, but once a year, the institution's leaders respond publicly.

The war in Ukraine started on February 24.

Russian President Vladimir Putin considers the war a "special military operation" to demilitarize Ukraine.

The West has responded to Russia, hitting the economy of this country with harsh sanctions.

As a result of the war, thousands of people have died and millions more have been displaced from their homes./REL
