MP Simon Harris was elected the new Prime Minister of Ireland in a vote in Parliament on Tuesday, becoming the youngest leader in the country's history.
Harris, 37, will take over from Leo Varadkar, who made a surprise resignation last month.
Harris will lead the three-party government coalition.
Harris had been Education Minister in the Varadkar government. He was the only candidate to replace him at the head of the centre-right Fine Gael party.
MPs in the Dail, the lower house of the Irish Parliament, confirmed Harris as Prime Minister with 88 votes in favour. 69 were against.
He formally took office from President Michael D. Higgins in a ceremony at the presidential palace in Dublin.
