Dramatic decline: For the first time in history, the euro drops below 94 lek

The exchange rate of the lek against the euro has marked a sharp decline today, falling below the level of 94 lek for the first time in history.

According to the official exchange rate of the Bank of Albania, one euro was exchanged today for 93.88 lekë, with a depreciation of 0.19 lekë, compared to the previous day. This is the largest daily decline this year.

Compared to the beginning of this year, the common currency has depreciated by 3%, or almost 3 lekë.

On average, for the period from January 3 to July 3, one euro was exchanged for an average of 95.8 lek, compared to 97.8 lek, which was the average for 2025.

Compared to the average of 2015, when it was exchanged for 139.7 lekë, the euro has fallen by 31.4%, or by almost 44 lekë.

Market players claim that the reasons for the decline are related to a number of factors, such as the flow of informal money that was entering the country after 2016 and was mainly invested in construction.

After 2022, an ever-increasing effect came from tourists, with foreign arrivals exceeding 12 million in 2025.

The decline in recent days is mainly related to seasonal effects, but market players claim that the situation is a bit chaotic and it is difficult to understand what is happening.

The fall of the euro has severely damaged exporters, but also the tourism sector, which receives income in euros, has devalued emigrant remittances.

On the other hand, it has been positive for importers, who need fewer euros to buy the same amount of goods, the state budget, which pays less for foreign debt, Albanians who go abroad for vacations, etc. (Monitor)
