Italian authorities have questioned Albanian Eduart Xhani, accused of murdering his mother, Meleqe Lusha, 39, at their home in Chiari, in the Brescia area. The hearing to confirm the 21-year-old's arrest measure took place at the hospital's psychiatric ward.

The young man was examined by specialists in the hours after the crime and was questioned by a judge at the Brescia court on Thursday. Before the judge, he confirmed that he had killed his mother, as he had told the carabinieri on Tuesday evening, adding that he had also tried to end his life before committing the crime, but without success.

A motive that doesn't exist

The answers he gave about why he killed his mother were apparently confusing and unclear, so much so that he had to be transferred to the hospital after being taken to prison. The judge has reserved a decision on whether to confirm his remand.

The young man, who had recently worked as a waiter at a Burger King in Rovato, an only child, grabbed a knife around 9 p.m. while he was in the kitchen with his mother and stabbed her several times in the face and chest, killing her. It appeared to be a sudden and unprovoked outburst on a normal evening, with no apparent argument or tension.

Escape and subsequent surrender to the barracks

After the murder, the young man with no criminal record, never having had any problems with the law, described by those who know him as introverted and silent, wandered for almost 10 hours by car between the provinces of Brescia and Cremona, wearing clothes stained with the blood of his murdered mother, in the darkness of the night and of himself.

He then stopped his Audi, which he was driving with a suspended license, in front of the Carabinieri barracks in Cremona. He confessed to the officer who opened the door: "I killed my mother in our home."
