A large-scale investigation into industrial cannabis cultivation has led to the dismantling of an Albanian criminal organization. Eighteen house searches spread across Belgium resulted in fifteen arrests.

The organization used intermediaries to arrange vehicles and cell phone numbers. This way, the leaders remained invisible. Illegal guards, often without documents, guarded the plantations, while forged documents provided additional camouflage.

Police teams searched buildings in Kortrijk, Menen, Harelbeke, Waregem, Wervik, Mouscron, Asse, Machelen, Antwerp, Ronse, Ledeberg, Verviers, Engis and Brussels. More than 120 officers worked together and three teams of sniffer dogs reinforced the operation.

Three operating nurseries in Ghent, Harelbeke and Verviers fell into the hands of the police. In total, more than 3,200 marijuana plants and cuttings were found. Two locations in Menen and Kortrijk appeared to be under construction. Forensic experts analyzed all traces, where 4.8 kilograms of marijuana, three cars, prohibited weapons and cash were analyzed. Bank accounts and cryptocurrencies were frozen.

14 men and one woman (aged 27-53) ended up in prison. Among them were ten Albanians, three Belgians, one Congolese and one Romanian.

Eleven suspects appeared before the investigating judge in Bruges. They were arrested for drug trafficking in a criminal context. A wanted Italian man is awaiting extradition. The council chamber confirmed eight arrests. Three suspects were released on bail. The public prosecutor's office appealed against a bail. West Flanders detectives will continue to lead the investigation.
