The National Institute of Cultural Heritage – under the Ministry of Economy, Culture and Innovation – has announced that works at Spaç Prison have been suspended.
"Based on Law No. 27/2018 'On Cultural Heritage and Museums', Council of Ministers No. 1125/2020 'On the approval of the rules for the design, implementation of conservation and protective interventions in material cultural assets, their supervision and approval', as well as following the on-site inspection to verify the works on 02.06.2025, the works have been suspended until a later date in order to fully assess the situation," the announcement states.
The suspension of the works comes after protests by former political prisoners and civil society representatives. They have declared themselves against the restoration project undertaken by the National Institute of Cultural Heritage. According to them, the intervention is destroying memory and is an attempt to erase the history of the former Spaç Prison.
