The Metropolitan of Korça, His Grace Joani, will be the one to temporarily lead the Autocephalous Orthodox Church of Albania, after Archbishop Anastasios Janullatos passed away this morning.

Through a media release, the Orthodox Church explains that during the Holy Synod meeting on Saturday morning, a decision was made for a temporary leader.

“The Holy Synod of the Autocephalous Orthodox Church of Albania convened in an extraordinary session today, January 25, 2025, at 11:30 a.m. At this session, the Synod expressed its deep sorrow for the repose in the Lord of our Father and Chief Shepherd, the late Archbishop of Tirana, Durrës and All Albania, His Eminence Anastasius. The Holy Synod also made the following decisions: The election of the Metropolitan of Korça, His Eminence Joan, as the Supervisor (Locum Tenens) of the Archbishopric Throne. The declaration of ecclesiastical mourning for five days, from January 25 to 29, 2025.”

Meanwhile, it is announced that the reception of the body of the late Archbishop will take place in front of the "Resurrection of Christ" Cathedral in Tirana, on January 28 at 4:00 PM.

"Following the reception, tributes will be held inside the Cathedral this afternoon and throughout the day tomorrow, Wednesday, January 29, 2025. The funeral service will be held on Thursday, January 30, at 11:00 a.m., after the Divine Liturgy," the announcement explains.

Archbishop Anasatas had been hospitalized in Athens due to his serious health condition, but passed away on Saturday morning at the age of 95.

Janullatos' body will be laid to rest in our country, as this was his will. Since 1992, he has lived in Albania, where he has also led the Orthodox Church, and has always expressed the desire for his body to be laid to rest in our country.

The location where Archbishop Anastasios' body will be placed has not yet been determined, but one of the possibilities being discussed is the Monastery of Saint Vlash in Durrës.
