After the tragic murder of Keli Hoxha in the Berat castle, his wife, Vjola Haxhia, sent a touching message to journalist Blendi Fevziu, telling her full version of how the event happened.
“We have been living in the UK for 14 years and had come to Albania for a holiday,” writes Vjola. “One of our destinations was to visit the Berat castle, so that we could teach the children Albanian history.”
According to her story, it all happened near the center of the castle, when their 8-year-old daughter, Sevia, saw a tied horse and asked to touch it. "The horse was alone, without its owner there. Keli approached with the girl to touch its hooves, but at that moment the horse's owner appeared, screaming not to touch it, because the horse was getting angry."
According to Vjola, her husband calmly told her that he had grown up in the village and knew how to behave with animals, but the owner began to severely insult him. "Keli told him that he did not want to argue with a man his grandfather's age and turned to come towards us. He spat on him three times and cursed him from the family. At that moment, Keli turned, but as soon as he turned to me, he said with his hand on my stomach: 'Spirit, call the ambulance, he killed me with a knife' and fell to the ground covered in blood."
The incident, according to her, occurred in front of dozens of tourists, while she categorically denies the versions that have been circulated in some media outlets that the conflict occurred due to non-payment. "It's a lie. He didn't take any photos, there was no argument about payment. He killed her for no reason, in front of our daughter."
At the end of her message, Vjola Haxhia expresses her despair at the lack of response from institutions:
"Why is no one talking about my children? They are in shock, they don't sleep, they don't eat, they don't talk. My daughter could have been killed that day too."
I am Vjola Haxhia, the wife of Keli Hoxha who was killed on Tuesday in Berat. First of all, I would like to thank you very much for the issue you have addressed and the time you have dedicated to our event.
My family has been living in Great Britain for 14 years, we had come to Albania for holidays and one of our destinations was a visit to the Berat castle to teach the children more about Albanian history.
We visited the castle with my family and my husband's mother, somewhere in the center of the castle there was a horse tied to a pole that my 8-year-old daughter Sevia saw and said to her father: can I touch the horse? I emphasize that at that moment the horse was alone, there was no owner there. Keli and her daughter approached to touch the horse by the hooves, at that moment the owner of the horse appeared, shouting directly not to touch the horse because it was angry. The man told her not to worry because I grew up in a village where I had a horse and I know how to treat it
. He started arguing with my husband in very vulgar language. My husband told him that you are my grandfather's age and I am not going to argue with you. I STRESS that at these moments Keli was hand in hand with the girl.
He turned his back and started to come towards us. At that moment he spat on my chest from behind 3 times and insulted his family. My husband turned and walked away but in a second he turned to me and with his hand on my stomach said: "Sir, call the ambulance because he killed me with a knife, and I fell to the ground covered in blood." There were over 100 tourists watching and you may have enough witnesses to confirm it. I read in some media that he was killed because he did not make the payment. I strongly oppose such news because he did not take any photos.
Why doesn't the media talk or doesn't the state care how my children are? That they are in shock, that my child could have been killed with a knife at that moment. The children are in a state of shock. They don't sleep, they don't eat, they don't talk.
