In a match that will be remembered for a long time due to the referee's error, Inter defeated Fiorentina 2–1 in the final match of the 24th week of Serie A, avenging last Thursday's 3–0 defeat in Florence, once again closing in on leaders Napoli.
The Blues dominated the first half, hitting two posts and unblocking the match with an own goal by Pongracic.
At the end of the first half, Inzaghi equalized from a penalty scored by Mandragora. At the beginning of the second half, Arnautovic (who came on for the injured Thuram) corrected the situation, scoring with a header that brought 3 points for Inter, which remains at a distance of -1 in the standings to Conte's team. The trusted ones of technician Palladino slipped to sixth place, behind Juventus.
The "way" didn't matter. The opportunity was too tempting to approach Napoli by reaching -1 from Conte, as important as it was to atone for the heavy defeat in Florence and recover the victory. Yes, four days were enough for Inter to return closer to its best version, but especially to move away from its worst.
Of course, the refereeing decision that gave the advantage to the Blues will provoke discussion and can already be classified as a serious mistake in a terrible weekend for La Penna and his friends: 1-0 was created by a corner, which in reality was clearly a final throw-in for the Viola, the penalty was not whistled for Fiorentina, but was then decided by VAR – but Inter responded on the field. The match was decided by an “underdog”, Arnautovic, who came on in place of Thuram in the first half due to a problem with the Frenchman’s ankle. The roar of San Siro speaks volumes about the importance of this victory, which adds more weight to the battle for the title.
IRREGULAR GOAL AND CONTROVERSY
The refereeing controversies in an already heated weekend are enriched with new cases in the Inter–Fiorentina match: the 1–0 goal of the black and blues came from the developments of a corner that did not actually exist, since the ball recovered by Bastoni (and then taken out for a corner by the Viola defense) had crossed about 30 centimeters of the end line, as the replay shows. The assistant did not report anything to the referee La Penna, who then awarded a corner kick, while the VAR, by protocol, could not intervene, because whether or not a ball went out of a line (except when it is the goal line for a goal/no goal, naturally) is not included in its duties.
In the 42nd minute, La Penna returned to the monitor because, after Gosens' header, Darmian (who had his back to the ball) hit him with his arm. The referee did not blow the whistle, the Viola players protested and everyone waited for a signal from the VAR. After the review, La Penna awarded a penalty: the arm was considered too wide and, despite the proximity of the fact that Darmian was trying to close it, he assessed it as a violation, although the Inter players protested.
