The Democratic Party will choose through the primaries the candidates it will present in the local elections of May 14, 2023. The greatest attention goes to the municipality of Tirana.
The Socialists will compete with the incumbent mayor, Erion Veliaj, who is seeking a third term. While in DP, at least until now, there are 3 candidates who will compete with each other first before facing the citizens' vote.
But who are the 3 candidates who have so far announced their candidacy for the municipality of Tirana and what are their pluses and minuses.
In the elections of April 25, 2021, Këlliçi was elected deputy of the Democratic Party for Tirana District.
After the changes of the DP, on August 30, 2021, Belind Këlliçi was elected Secretary of the Department of Immigration and Diaspora. After the split in PD, Kelliçi joined the "Berisha" group and was part of the Re-establishment Commission. For the local elections of 2023, Këlliçi was the first candidate who made the presentation to become part of the primaries of the Democratic Party to compete for the leadership of the Municipality of Tirana. His advantage is that he seems to have the support of the conservative PD electorate, but as a prominent party figure, he does not seem to have the support of the gray electorate. He is also accused of ties to the oligarchs, but also indirect ties to the majority.
Gert Bogdani: He was born on July 7, 1980 in Tirana. He completed his studies at New York Polytechnic University in computer science. He started his political career in 2007, where he ran with the Democratic Party for Mayor of Municipal Unit no. 10 Tirana, a race which he wins. During this time, he continued his activity as a political spokesperson of the DP.
In 2009, Gerti Bogdani ran in the parliamentary elections of June 28, 2009 and was elected the youngest deputy in the Assembly of Albania. From 2009 to 2013, he held the post of Chairman of the Youth Forum of the Democratic Party. Later, Bogdani was also elected as a member of the presidency when the PD was led by Lulzim Basha.
After the breakup of the Democratic Party, Bogdani did not come out publicly to take a position on which group he belonged to, until a few weeks ago when he appeared in a meeting with the leader of the Democratic Party, Sali Berisha. Compared to Kelliç and Alimehmet, Bogdani looks like the weakest candidate in the race, as he does not have much support within the blue headquarters.
Ilir Alimehmeti: He is the third and the last candidate who announced his candidacy for the primaries. He has no prior career in the Democratic Party personally, but his family does. His parents have served as deputies and municipal councilors in Tirana. Ilir Alimehmeti is 43 years old, he is a doctor by profession and is a lecturer at the Faculty of Medicine. Alimehmeti received a lot of media attention in the 2 long years of the coronavirus pandemic, as an epidemiologist.
In the clash within the Democratic Party, he chose to support Sali Berisha. Alimehmeti was elected a member of the National Council of the Democratic Party on April 30, 2022. Unlike Kelliçi, Alimehmeti does not seem to have the support of the conservative structures of the DP, but enjoys the support of the non-party electorate, the gray electorate.
