Prime Minister Edi Rama has responded to the accusations brought by some British officials who declared that Albanians are part of criminal groups and demanded their departure.

British Home Secretary Suella Braverman said two days ago that the country faces an "invasion" of people crossing the English Channel by boat, as she reacted to mounting pressure over her repeated safety breaches.

In a post on Twitter, Rama writes that Britain should not make rhetoric of crime "that ends up punishing the innocent", but invites it to take the example of Germany that "tightened" its systems for immigrants.

The head of the Albanian government says that Albanians in Great Britain work hard and pay taxes. According to him, the Albanian government has the duty to fight crime at home.

Rama's post

Targeting Albanians (as some shamefully did when they fought for Brexit) as the cause of Britain's crime and border problems makes for easy rhetoric but ignores the hard facts. Repeating the same things and expecting different results is insanity (ask Einstein!)

70% of the 140,000 Albanians who have moved to the UK were living in Italy and Greece. 1200 of them are business people. Albanians in Great Britain work hard and pay taxes. Great Britain must fight crime gangs of all nationalities and stop discriminating against Albanians to justify policy failures.

Albania is a NATO country and is negotiating its membership in the EU. It is also a safe place of origin. When Germany had a similar problem, it tightened its systems. The UK can and should do the same, by not responding with a rhetoric of crime that ends up convicting the innocent.

Albania is not a rich country and has been a victim of empires for a very long time, we have never had ours. We have a duty to fight crime at home and we are doing this resolutely, as we also work closely with others. Ready to work more closely with the UK, but the facts are decisive. So is mutual respect.
