The Union of Albanian Journalists has reacted regarding the physical and verbal attack on the reporter Freard Rista of the investigative show 'Piranja' on SYRI TV, as well as the operator who enabled the preservation of the sequences and images of this shocking event.

In the statement to the media, the Union of Albanian Journalists emphasizes that "the official complaint made by the reporter Rista, against violent persons, followed the initiation of legal proceedings against the accused persons, although the judicial process still remains open".

Statement of the Union of Albanian Journalists:

Confrontations of reporters on duty, with violators and aggressors-lawbreakers, evidence of risks for free reporting

Tirana on June 25, 2024

Acts of aggressive behavior, violent rejection as well as threats by individuals, commercial entities and various persons who have attributes as administrators of entities with commercial and public activity, towards reporters and mainly investigative ones, have increased significantly.

At the UGSH, for the period of the last two months, six cases have been reported against colleagues from various broadcasts and media. On June 18, 2024, physical and verbal violence against the reporter Freard Rista was denounced through the images published in the show "Piranhas", even hitting him with hard objects and damaging the journalist's work tools. Violence was also used against the operator of the show in question, who at the same time enabled the preservation of the sequences and images of this shocking event. The official report made by the reporter Rista, against violent persons, was followed by the initiation of legal proceedings against the accused persons, although the judicial process still remains open.

Meanwhile, earlier, another complaint about threats and intimidating language to the UGSH came from the reporter R.Cerga of the "Vetting" show, who has recorded the dialogue and the intimidating insistence of the person being interviewed.

In the time frame of this two-month period, there have been denunciations of such aggressions against reporters from several investigative media and broadcasts, as well as online and local ones. In these denunciations, the fact of increasing violence is emphasized, both as verbal aggression and as a violation of the physical integrity of journalists. In five cases, there are even attacks on the tools and logistics of reporters on duty.

The Union of Albanian Journalists raises its voice to the law-enforcement institutions for a quick reaction in time and in every case to bring the aggressors and threats of reporters to legal responsibility.

The mentioned cases, even though they have been reported to the legal bodies, continue to remain in suspense and in proceedings without a time limit, which leaves room for undervaluation and leaving on the calendar.

The UGSH does not only raise its voice against these cases, but being loyal to the permanent solidarity with colleagues in the field, demands that public denunciations be also legal, and even published by all mediums. Meanwhile, we appeal for rigorous follow-up of the initiated processes and increased attention of all organizations. Our insistence consists in the fact that no one is left out of legal responsibility. People who are protagonists or participants in threatening and even more violent acts against journalists deserve inevitable legal punishment.
