The former US ambassador in Tirana, Alexander Arvizu, where he commented on the political events in the country and the non-grata declaration of Sali Berisha.
Arvizu said in a TV interview that there is no detailed information about DASH's decision against Berisha, as he no longer has access to internal information, but he emphasized that the internationals, the US and the EU cannot interfere in internal political matters, like that of the choice of leaders in politics.
According to him, for every American ambassador, it is important to show respect for Albanians.
This statement comes after Ambassador Yuri Kim has repeatedly demanded the removal of Sali Berisha from politics and recognizes Enkelejd Alibeaj as acting chairman of the DP.
Arvizu underlined that Albanians should be treated with respect and that they have the right to choose their leaders.
"First, I no longer represent the government and I do not have access to the official information that leads to these decisions. For me, when I was ambassador and for every American ambassador, it is important to show respect for Albanian citizens. Albanians know and understand very well what it means to be respected. Respect must be shown in everything you do. Even if a decision that is made is not the right one, people understand its significance.
As for the opposition, I think it is important for the citizens to understand that whoever you choose for the government and the opposition, it is not a decision for the USA and the EU, but for Albania. It is your government and your opposition.
We appreciate the friendship and support that Albanians give in the USA. Therefore, we must give an opinion with respect.
But these kinds of decisions, about who is in the opposition and who should be in the government, belong to the Albanians and not to Washington or Brussels", declared the former ambassador.
Arvizu added that the Albanian opposition since 2015 has been divided and "almost crumbled".
"I understand the return of Mr. Berisha. Since I left Albania in 2015, my concern was that the conservative opposition has not been constructive, it has almost crumbled and divided. This has opened the way for Mr. Rama and the socialists to consolidate power," he said.
