Almost three weeks after the release, the film "Barbie", by director and writer Greta Gerwig, has collected a truly surprising value, a full 1.03 billion dollars globally, according to estimates from Warner Bros. This makes Gerwig the first female director of a billion-dollar film.

"I've been in this game for 30 years and the Barbie and Barbenheimer phenomenon is as unprecedented as it is unpredictable," said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst at Comscore.

According to Dergarabedian, only about 50 films in history have reached the billion dollar mark. He added that the film's marketing campaign was the first sign that "Barbie" would be a hit at the box office.

"The marketing campaign for 'Barbie' set in motion a chain of events that led to the word 'Barbenheimer' being added to the popular lexicon due to its shared release date with 'Oppenheimer,' and from then on we all knew something very special and uniqueness would create a much bigger than expected result for the film, not only for its opening weekend, but for its global theatrical run," he adds.
