Actor and director Steven Spielberg went to great lengths in early talks to convince Will Smith to star in the 1997 sci-fi film Men in Black.
Smith revealed this during an interview on Kevin Hart's "Hart to Heart" show, as he also revealed that Spielberg "sent a helicopter to talk to him" in order to convince him to participate in the film. which Steven executive produced.
In the conversation, Smith revealed that he met with the Oscar-winning director in a room inside his home that was decorated with posters for iconic Spielberg films such as Jurassic Park and Jaws, which Will joked that he felt they were present on purpose to "remind" him exactly who he was saying "no" to.
He went on to say that Spielberg asked him without diplomacy, saying – “tell me why you don't want to be part of my film?”.
"I didn't want to make two alien movies, one after the other. I didn't want to go from 'Independence Day' to 'Man in Black' — I didn't want to be, the foreign guy," Smith explained.
Smith starred in Independence Day, a sci-fi action film about aliens invading Earth, alongside Bill Pullman and Jeff Goldblum in 1996.
"Men in Black" also deals with aliens, telling the story of a secret intergalactic organization that monitors crimes committed by aliens or those that pose a threat to earth.
Of course, Smith eventually ended up landing the role of Jay in Men in Black and credits his decision to feeling "protected" by Spielberg's credibility.
It was clearly the right decision, as Men in Black became a hugely successful franchise, spawning two sequels as well as a fourth season, Men in Black: International, in 2019.
