Elections in Russia, the President of KiE mocks Vladimir Putin: Congratulations

The President of the European Council, Charles Michel, ironically "congratulated" Russian President Vladimir Putin on his re-election, even though voting has just begun.

"I want to congratulate Vladimir Putin on his sweeping victory in the elections that start today," he wrote on the X social network.

"Without opposition. No freedom. No choice," he added.

There is no doubt about the victory of Vladimir Putin, who has been in power for 24 years. This will allow him to hold power until 2030.

The crackdown on voices critical of the Kremlin has clearly intensified since the start of Russia's offensive in Ukraine in February 2022, as authorities have sent most dissidents and thousands of other Russians to prison and driven many more into exile.

Voting lasts three days, including the Russian-occupied areas of Ukraine.
