Dozens of countries across Africa suffered a major internet outage this Thursday after multiple undersea telecommunications cables were allegedly damaged.

MTN Group, one of Africa's largest internet providers, said the ongoing outages were the result of "failures in multiple large submarine cables".

"Our technicians are actively working to reroute traffic through alternate network paths," the South African company said in a media statement.

Grid outages caused by damaged cables have occurred in Africa in recent years.

However, "today's outage points to something bigger (and) this is among the most severe," said Isik Mater, director of research at NetBlocks, a group that documents internet outages around the world, Reuters reports.

NetBlocks said data transmission and measurement shows a major disruption in international transits, "likely at, or near, underwater network cable spans."

According to Bloomberg reports "at least three submarine cables have been damaged off the coast of Africa, causing major disruptions across the continent".
