President Donald Trump has announced that the United States will double tariffs on steel and aluminum imports, from 25% to 50%, starting Wednesday. The news was announced during a rally in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where Trump stressed that the measure is intended to strengthen domestic industry and reduce dependence on imports, especially from China.

Trump also announced that $14 billion would be invested in the steel sector through a partnership between US Steel and the Japanese company Nippon Steel, although he later admitted that he had not yet approved the final agreement.

"There will be no layoffs or relocation of production overseas," Trump declared, promising a $5,000 bonus for American steelworkers.

He said that tariffs imposed in his first term in 2018 "saved" US Steel and that increasing them to 50% will ensure the industry's survival.

"We will put Pennsylvania steel in the backbone of America," he said.

Local steelworkers have expressed optimism about the impact of tariffs and new investments, although there are still concerns about the implementation of union contracts in the partnership with Japan.
